FOOD PRICE HIKE HITS KERALA

Kerala is now witnessing a very huge price hike and price instability food and essentials. The prices of the essentials are not a standard now. It varies a lot from shop to shop. Market lost its reliability a lot because of this. The Wholesale and retail prices differ a lot now. The price hike is chiefly due to the reduced agriculture production throughout the whole world. The heavy rains in the nearby states also made the situation much worst.


The food availability insecurity is a major challenge today.  The prices of certain commodities increased up to 25%.The Government of the state as well as the public distribution system are making market intervention to face this challenge.

Kerala state government is now distributing the essential items through the Supplyco outlets at a subsidised rate. For this service through Supplyco the Customer need to produce the ration card. The very long queue in front of the supplyco outlet clearly demonstrates the real face of the situation.

Kerala government is now planning various market intervention mechanisms to effectively organize the Christmas season.

The only solution to this situation is to increase the states domestic production. Now Kerala is almost totally depending on other states for agriculture products. The state’s food production and processing system should be boosted to overcome this hazard. The government should also take measures to check the black market to prevent the price hike.
